Thinking back to your childhood and the many Halloween costumes you wore, which costume was your favorite and why?

I was a beatnik! What is that you ask? Well, I’m not real sure now that I think about it, but I loved being a beatnik. I was dressed in black leggings ,(stretch pants with stirrups back then), a black turtleneck sweater or a long white artist shirt, and a black beret. Maybe a long cigarette holder and flat ballet shoes. A lot like Hepburn in the 60’s movies.

In 150 words write a profile of someone named Margaret Mallory.

Margaret Mallory was raised in a strict Catholic community. Her family lived so close to the Catholic School she could walk. It was a safe and structured childhood that she enjoyed. Today Margaret is an Investigative Reporter for the Chicago Tribune. A long way from that small town Kansas community she grew up in.

Margaret never married, she enjoyed her career so much that she didn’t have time to think about dating or marriage. Margaret turned 30 this week. Oh, her life is full. She has twenty-three nieces and nephews so they fill the need for children.

Sometimes she takes a break from the daily grind at the paper and goes away on Sabbatical at a lovely prayer community that is run by the Archdiocese. The enitre time you are there you not speak, only pray. Some people have chosen to spend their lives there in prayer.

Margaret had considered being a nun when she was younger but, her true calling was to write the truth about the crimes being committed in the Chicago area, including the murder of her sister, Isabela in 1999.

In 200 words describe a hot day.

When I stepped out of my office I could feel the humidity on my face and I thought, there goes my makeup. Oh well. Then, the closer I got to the double doors at the end of the corridor the clammier my skin began to feel. I rubbed my arms and my hands were wet. When I looked up at the windows on the outside doors, the sun was shining through so bright, I started digging in my bag for my sunglasses. At least I can protect my eyes but, why didn’t I put on sunscreen this morning?

Then, the doors opened suddenly and I was startled by the brightness that intruded on my thoughts. Instictively I shielded my eyes with my forearm, and I noticed the dampness on my forehead. Then I stepped outside, into the convection oven that could cook anything I wanted in 30 minutes or less. As the heat hit my face, the burn from the sun on my arms made me want to cover them. I walked to my car and noticed there wasn’t any air moving, no breeze, no leaves were twitching. I felt stymied. As I opened my car door the heat hit me worse than before, and I waited to crawl inside the oven. Once inside I started the car and hit the buttons for the a/c. Ahhhh relief at last!

This Week’s Theme: Tell the story of a physical scar your character has.

Nobody knows it’s there unless I tell them and then raise my shirt and show it to them It looks like I’ve been in a knife fight with some one. It’s about 4 inches wide, across my ribcage under my left arm. Just to sound tough, that’s what I tell them it is. That I got in a knife fight when I was younger. It sure impresses the girls.Just me and my family know the truth though. It all happened when my lung collapsed and I couldn’t breathe. My Mom took me to the emergency room and they took me right in even though they were busy. They did an x-ray that confirmed my lung had collapsed. It was very painful. Then all the Doctor’s started moving really fast. They cut me open on my left side and stuck a hose inside me to start reinflating my lung. Then they took me by ambulance to the big hospital in the city. I was 19 years old. They called it spontaneous pnuemothorax. Yes, very painful man. Had to have major lung surgery on both lungs. It happens in very tall and thin young men. They had to rough up the lungs, put a talc powder on them to make them stick to the lining wall. It is the most painful experience you can ever imagine. I think I would have rather been in a knife fight then to have spontaneous pnuemothorax.

This Week’s Theme: Flip a coin. Heads, and your characters hates Valentines Day, Tails, and they love it. Now come up with the reason your character feels the way they do.

“I hate Valentine’s Day! Hate it, hate it, hate it,” shouted Gilly as he slammed the back door behind him. “Whoever invented it should be excalculated!”.Gilly was shouting at his mother as she was trying to cook supper. She grinned and turned from the stove and looked at her seven year old son and said, “Why do you hate Valentines day Gilly?.”He threw down his backpack and kicked off his shoes by the front door. “Because all the girls are making google eyes at me and my valentines box is stuffed already and we still have two whole days until Valentine’s Day. Uggghhhh! I don’t know how much more I can take,” Gilly said as he thumped down on the chair at the kitchen table.”Well that doesn’t sound like a very good reason to hate Valentine’s Day. It sounds like a reason to love it” Mother said softly. “Ooooh noooo mom you don’t understand!” Now Gilly is pacing back and forth in front of the window. “All the guys hate me now because I am a ‘spud’ to all the girls.”His mother just laughed quietly to herself, went over and put her arm around Gilly and said, “Well Gilly, I don’t blame you for hating Valentine’s Day now. I wouldn’t want to be a ‘spud’ either.” She gave him a big hug and whispered to him that everything would work out just fine.
